PageRank© 2 in 2 Months, Does It Matter?

While the world was doing the countdown for the year 2009, Google on the other hand was updating the PageRank.

I remember it was only 2 months ago when Google updated their PageRank. Back then, Blog De Manila.com was just about to be launched and so it was still zero.

You see, I’m a blogger who doesn’t mind my PageRank.Seriously, I cannot find the advantages of being on the top. Don’t get me wrong, I love the current level of BlogDeManila which is PageRank 2, but it doesn’t tell me much on what good it can bring on my blog.

I’ve have just checked some popular sites and blogs, and still I can’t comprehend how does PageRank works. Take the following examples:

  • Yahoo ‘s PR is at 9 while CNN is 10. Does it mean that more people are checking news at CNN and more popular than Yahoo?
  • Yahoo’s Mail domain (mail.yahoo.com) is at 9 while Gmail is at 8. Does it shows that there are a lot of yahoo mail user’s than gmail?
  • Friendster is 7, MySpace is 9 while Facebook is at 9. Is this their ranking of popularity in a given time?

What puzzles me are these two popular blogs,  JohnChow.com and JohnCow.com are both leveled at PR 3. There is no doubt that JohnChow is more popular than JohnCow. JohnChow SERP (Search Engine Result Page) is even much is even much higher! I can conclude on this two examples  is that PageRank doesn’t ultimately determined who is popular or not. It doesn’t even give you the hint who has the authority.

The theory is, only Google knows the real rank of your page. As I mentioned above, I don’t whine about PR, I’m also one of those who are excited when their PR goes up, but it’s not my obsession to make my site get a higher rank. Search engine result page (serp) is much more important to me.

So tell me, does PageRank matter to you at all? Does it have impact on you getting more money online?

My new blog @ http://www.ragingrev.com just hit a PR of 3, i was curious as to how this whole thing works just like you are

Wikipedia has a thorough but confusing article on it here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Page_rank

my understanding is that PR is decided by the number of links in that a site has, so if 100 pages link to your blog and those sites have a PR of 3, your PR goes higher with every link, they have a really complex equation to decide what it is…..

i think i had something like 2000 links in on my blog that gave it a PR3 so it take a lot of small links to build up to anything significant

and i have yet to see any benefit to the higher PR on my blog..so who knows what it actually does

It’s not about how popular you are or how many people view your site. It’s the quality of the sites linking you in. If you inbound links coming from sites that have higher PR than you do, that’s good PR for you. But if the sites that linked to you are either Google-banned sites and sites that have low PR and not relevant to your genre, they don’t count. So Yahoo even if it has an Alexa of 1 is a PR 9 maybe because sites linking in to Yahoo are bad quality sites rather than CNN.com

PR is nothing actually unless you want to make use of it—paid posts. If you want to do paid posts, then your PR really matters.

Yeah, I also wonder. I mean, there are other sites that I think deserves to have high PageRanks but that’s according to me. There are many factors that may affect the PageRank.

When boyfriend placed a PageRank button on my site, it became a big deal to me. I based my visitors through that. He keeps on telling me that PR can be cheated so you don’t really rely on that if you’re after “returning visitors” which he said is the most important.

Anyway, as I have become active blog hopping and adding adgitize and entrecard, my PR from 0 went to 2. Does it matter to me? Now.. not really. ^^

JohnChow.com is ranked low because of his regular paid posts and paid links. Google does not like sponsored reviews and sponsored links being used for search engine ranking benefit.

While PageRank doesn’t look useful, you will know the problem only if you lose it. The effect is on your search engine traffic. So, don’t take it lightly. Thanks.

My main url blogio.net currently has a PR of 4, while my blog at blogio.net/blog/ just got updated to PR 3. The blog has only been around for a month and a half, so I’m really happy with the latest PR update.

Like commented above, the PR does not reflect how popular a site is, it is rather an indication of the number and quality of inbound links. After big news events, a lot of blogs and other sites will link to the original story at CNN, helping CNN to get a high PR. Far less sites link to Yahoo.

The whole PR thing is often used as a value indicator when selling a site, in reality PR isn’t worth anything as an indicator for a sites quality or value, as the system can easily be gamed.

i have actually whined about PR a couple of weeks ago because i want to get more paid post to earn from my blog. yes, PR is only important if you are going to have paid posts. but now, i simply want to post entries of my interests – nothing more. PR stressed me out over the last few weeks already so Im done with it =)

it’s actually like a chicken-egg situation, a lot of bloggers wants to get high PR in order for them to earn more for their paid post. But, once they participated in any paidpost services, big G starts to slap them with low PR.

  • Comment by cooiky |

    that is possible.
and when i build my first site,it is just a personal blog.and when the google pagerank changes,my rank hits three.haha.

I have no idea what the use of PR is, or what’s its relevance to my blog, until Fedhz informed me that I have a PR1 already. Then I started reading blogs that are so excited about their PR1′s and PR2′s. Ate Bingkee’s explanation cleared my confusion about it. :)
Btw, I have something for you in my blog (an award) so please check it out. :) Thanks!!

ya ur right w/ ur comment @ my site. but how would you like to assess this pr1 in here?

  • Comment by pau |

wow! congrats PR can really be useful if you are monetising yur site

as for mabelle, its sad that you have low PR now –do you think its because of paid blogging? i plan to apply to similar sites but if google doesnt like it–it might hurt us in the long run -and that aint good…

  • Comment by Leon |

PageRank is very important, as it brings in search engine traffic, which is very crucial for bloggers. Start putting up sponsored posts and you’ll quickly lose that traffic.

  • Comment by mabelle |

    @ pau

Well, losing pr is neither a pain nor a frustration anymore (for me). Been used to it already! What’s painful is that when you will not get paid for the tasks you made simply because your blog doesn’t have pr anymore when in fact during the time you made it you still have your page ranks. Anyway, when you exert effort hoping u will earn something but then you will get nothing, I guess that’s what hurts a lot. :)

  • Comment by austenfan |

yep, PR matters when you want to try doing paid posts. (which I actually want. haha). Congrats on your PR 2! :)

I quit worrying about PR, it is far too stressful for zero outcome. All I care about is SERP and quality keywords. The thing is the SERP position seems related to PR- though maybe I am wrong?
